The Twenty-first edition of the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation's Capital came to a close today after two intense weeks, during which more than 190 documentary, narrative, animated, archival, experimental and children's films were screen throughout the Washington, DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia region.

On November 8, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) inaugurated their exhibit "Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment" at Gran Teatro del Cibao in Santiago. The exhibit presents graphics and scientific information from the Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment, a reference book published by GFDD and FUNGLODE.

On Saturday, September 15, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) successfully concluded the Dominican Chapter of the Citizen Dialogue on Biodiversity, during the initiative "World Wide Views on Biodiversity," organized by the Technology Council of Denmark, with support from the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity. Twenty-five countries, including the Dominican Republic, were selected to participate in the global consultation process.

The film, directed by Jean-Michel Cousteau, celebrates the life of the French explorer, conservationist, filmmaker, pioneer and visionary, in commemoration of what would be his 100th birthday.

Since 2010, GFDD has been working with the Sylvia Earle Alliance to create content for the “Explore the Ocean” layer of Google Earth, launched by Google in 2009. “Explore the Ocean,” curated by the Sylvia Earle Alliance, collects local stories and locally-based knowledge from people around the globe concerned about the health of the world’s oceans.

Over the course of the four-day trek, forty-five students from three Dominican high-schools -- Centro de Excelencia Media Profesora Cristina Billini Morales “Fe y Alegria”, Centro de Excelencia República de Colombia, and Centro Educativo República de Guatemala – had the opportunity to scale the Dominican Republic’s highest summit alongside Dominican professional mountaineer and seasoned Everest trekker, Karim Mella.

Among their initiatives for the promotion of a culture of cinematography for the benefit of the environment, GFDD and FUNGLODE present the first installment of their contest for short films and public service announcement, Globo Verde Dominicano Award.
Registration is open for the Second Short Films Competition and public announcement contest on the environment and sustainable development, sponsored by DREFF. The competition is open to Dominican directors in the Dominican Republic. Registration is open from 01/30/2013 to 07/12/2013.
The shipment of the material will be accepted until July 15, 2013. The Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival reserves the right to change the duration of the competition as well as the date of the final selection.
The films must be produced in the Dominican Republic in order to compete.
Participants must be over 18 and under 45 years old.
Seventy percent of the actors in the film must be Dominican.
